Remembering Remembrance Day

We spent quite a bit of time discussing Remembrance Day. The students wrote and drew beautiful Thank You messages that were mailed to veterans and those who still serve. Students later created Christmas cards which were mailed to members of the Armed Services who are serving in Afghanistan and Ukraine.

This Week's Homework

Hello families!
You may notice that one side of the homework sheet from this week is the same as one of last week's sheets - oops! Sorry about that.
In lieu of a new sheet, have your child spend some time using some of the other resources on this blog (Raz Kids, Dreambox, Xtra math or some of the links on our Math Page).
Have a great week!

Scholastic Book Orders

Hello families! Thank you for the strong interest in Scholastic Book Orders! I wanted to let you know about a new feature where families can pay for their order online. The website is a little bit picky and will not accept the period when writing St. Patrick, which makes us hard to find. Please have a look at the picture below that contains the exact information (including the website) for you to pay for your child's order online.
If you do not wish to pay online, please send a cheque payable to "Scholastic Canada" for the amount owing. If absolutely necessary, I will accept exact payments in cash, but cannot provide change (I don't often carry cash, sorry!).
Thank you for your continued support!

Math Test on Monday October 5!

We will be having our first math test on Monday October 5! We have spent the first month of school learning all about place value and the different ways to represent numbers. The students completed a Test Review sheet in class today and it will be sent home (along with other work samples) for you to review no later than Thursday.
If you would like to begin helping your child prepare for the test before then, please have a look at the links on the Math page.
For this test, students will need to do the following:
  • Represent a number in standard form, expanded form, base ten form, words and pictures
  • Understand the value of a digit (i.e. that the 7 in 742 is 700).
  • Compare and order numbers (i.e. arrange numbers from greatest to least).

Beginning Language

 Beginning our Language (English) Studies

Word Study

We are reviewing basic sounds in words to start the year. many students find the short vowel sounds tricky to differentiate: Is it sit, set, sat? Is it pen, pin, pun? Our word study dictations and word review will focus on these short vowel sounds. Students will have a list of words to learn on Wednesdays to prepare for the following Tuesday. Word wall words will be added to the pattern words. When I dictate the words I will ask students to study "band" for example. They should then be able to transfer that pattern to stand and brand by using listening skill during the dictation.

Sentence writing will include when to use capital letters and end punctuation.

We are exploring WHY people read and WHAT people read. Students generated this list.

Reading

Research suggests that the best way for children to improve their reading is to read a book at their "just right level" of difficulty. If a book is too difficult, the child will not only feel discouraged, they simply will not understand enough to grasp the meaning. If a book is easy or familiar, it may provide practice for becoming fluent, but it needs to balanced with books that have enough challenge to help the reader improve their skill. We call it the "Goldilocks" rule where the reading level should be "just right".

Students will learn to figure out themselves if a book is easy, just right, or too hard. They can count the number of mistakes made on a page using the 5 finger rule. 5+ mistakes, the book may be too hard. 2 or less may mean the book is too easy.

Welcome to Third Grade!

Welcome to our Grade 3 blog and welcome back to another fantastic school year at St. Patrick Catholic School! We are thrilled to be a part of this learning community! We look forward to working closely with you and getting to know your child. Please take a few minutes to complete the Parents as Partners questionnaire by clicking on the photo below. The information that you provide will help us get to know your child better. We ask that this be completed by Friday, September 18th.

This blog will be updated regularly with information regarding homework and upcoming class and school events. We will also be updating our curriculum pages for you to have a better understanding of what we are working on in class and how you can help to support your child's learning. To the right of your screen, you will also see a list of Grade 3 links. Stay tuned for more helpful links to be added in the coming weeks!
Thank you for your support!
